In September of 1960 Porsche teamed up with the old family friend and fellow Austrian Carlo Abarth to construct twenty new 356 B based racing cars for the 1961 season, with an option for a further twenty cars.
The prototype car debuted during the 1961 Targa Florio and immediately scored a class victory. It was the start of a highly successful racing car, which saw the Abarth Porsche dominate its class for several years. At the next World Championship round, the important Nürburgring 1000 km race, the 356B GTL scored a clean sweep in its class. The Abarth Porsche would go on to win its class in the Targa Florio a further three times and at Le Mans for three years running. In later years, the cars were also fitted with larger, two-litre engines. Driven in period by the legendary Stirling Moss and Graham Hill.
The car we offer for sale is recreation of these Abarth racers, it started life as an Australian delivered 356B, but became known as the Gregory Abarth Special.
Created by the late John Gregory, a renowned Porsche 356 specialist, for himself, this car was built to the highest standard with performance being the main objective.
A 2.0 litre six cylinder engine from a 911S is fitted, along with a special ratio gearbox, four wheel disc brakes and 12 Volt electrical system.
This is a very fast, rust free and fully engineered 356B Special, ready for road, rally or track use.
