Conceived as “The People’s Car”, the Volkwagen Beetle was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche before the war and remained in production for more than five decades, with an incredible twenty million turned out by factories from Germany to Mexico. The details may have changed over the years, but the original concept, including the air cooled flat four behind the rear axle, remained the same. The Type 1’s body shape graduated from the original split window to the oval window in March 1953 and the windows were further enlarged for better visibility in 1957.
How rare is this? A Beetle that’s done just 26,566 miles from new and still feels much the same as it would have back in 1963, from the way it drives to the condition of the grey vinyl trim, paint and trim. A true time-warp car, this matching numbers Beetle Deluxe has fantastic documentation, including the original service book showing the dealer, Kruger Motors of Trinity Gardens, South Australia. Kruger continued to service the Volkswagen until the 1970s, after which the book is stamped by D. R. Richardson of Norwood and it remained in South Australia for many years, before moving to NSW, and is currently in the ownership of a VW collector. Finished in the original Ruby Red colour, the Beetle comes with a wallet containing the original instruction book, service book etc along with a copy of Australian Volkswagen Magazine featuring the car.
The build quality on these early Beetles still amazes, particularly when you consider they were conceived as an economy car, and the German engineering means a good example will be immensely rewarding to drive. The 1192cc flat four in this car still pulls smoothly and the four speed box changes gears works well, as do the brakes and steering. Perfect for the collector who values originality and authenticity, this Beetle Deluxe needs to be seen to be appreciated.
